This year Baltic Circus Camp was different. We had big plans and big presentations in mind, but we all know what happened. What we didn’t know is that the experience we were going to have will be even bigger and richer than we planned.

After postponing and rescheduling again and again, in March 2021 we finally made a decision to make the camp online (it wasn’t an easy decision – we know everybody hates Zoom at this point). And if we are lucky – make a second part of the camp live later in 2021. We knew we didn’t want it to be a standard zoom conference, so after some brainstorming we found two teachers who can turn anything into an extraordinary experience – Aedín Walsh and Jason Dupree. Together with these incredible humans BCC participants went on a journey of finding themselves as creators in digital space, trying out new digital tools and exploring performance in a digital landscape.
Online edition gathered together circus artists from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Germany, the format allowed to reach a broad spectrum of participants.

Šiais metais Baltijos šalių šiuolaikinio cirko stovykla vyko kitaip. Turėjome daug planų, galvojome apie prezentacijas, tačiau visi žinome, kas nutiko. Nepaisant visų sunkumų, 2021 metų stovykla įvyko ir tapo svarbiu momentu Baltijos šiuolaikinio cirko bendruomenei.

Po ilgų dvejonių ir kelių perkelimų, 2021 metų kovą nusprendėme, kad šiais metais stovykla vyks nuotoliniu būdu. Žinojome, kad nenorime organizuoti paprastos, visiems jau gerokai įgrisusios zoom konferencijos, todėl pasikvietėme mokytojus, kurie gali bet kokią idėją paversti ypatinga patirtimi – Aedín Walsh (Švedija) bei Jason Dupree (Jungtinė Karalystė). Kartu su šiais nuostabiais mokytojais dalyviai tyrinėjo savo kūrybines praktikas per skaitmeninę prizmę, išbandė naujus virtualios kūrybos įrankius ir ieškojo naujų erdvių pasirodymams virtualioje aplinkoje.
Stovykloje dalyvavo cirko artistai iš Lietuvos, Latvijos, Estijos. Virtualioje stovykloje sudalyvavo ir tie kūrėjai, kurie dėl įvairių priežasčių negalėtų prisijungti  gyvai.

After the online edition, when the restrictions for the gatherings and events were lifted, we decided that the offline edition of the camp needs to happen in 2021. And we couldn’t think of a better teacher to invite than the one who we started with – Roberto Magro, circus artist, director and dramaturg, a good friend of contemporary circus field of Lithuania. The choice of place was also simple – Lithuania finally has a dedicated circus space – “Cirko Sapiens”, and we knew it was perfect for this event. 10 circus artists from Lithuania, Latvia and Poland gathered there for a week to explore the creative method and apply it to their own practice. We consciously decided not to make any public presentation of the workshop in the end of the camp – after the long and hard year of quarantines and isolation we just needed to come together as a community and share this experience without any extra pressure.

Po virtualios stovyklos, kai susibūrimų ribojimai buvo atlaisvinti, nusprendėme organizuoti antrą stovyklos dalį gyvai. Greitai supratome, kad geresnio mokytojo, negu geras ŠCA draugas, cirko artistas, režisierius ir dramaturgas Roberto Magro mes nerasime. Dėl vietos irgi ilgai negalvojome – Lietuva pagaliau turi šiuolaikiniam cirkui skirtą vietą – “Cirko Sapiens” centrą Kaune. 10 šiuolaikinio cirko kūrėjų iš Lietuvos, Latvijos ir Lenkijos susirinko savaitei intensyvaus darbo su Roberto Magro metodu ir jo integracija į kasdienę praktiką. Sąmoningai nusprendėme nedaryti jokio pristatymo stovyklos pabaigoje – po šių ilgų karantininių metų, pilnų izoliacijos, cirko bendruomenei labiausiai reikėjo tiesiog susitikti ir įveikti šią savaitę kartu be papildomo spaudimo.

The feeling that came after these two events was strong and unmistakable – we are here. Circus is not beginning to happen here in the Baltic countries, it is happening now, and we have a lot to offer. Creating a safe space for the Baltic circus community has been the core value of the Contemporary Circus Association from the very beginning, and this year we did it again, both online and in real life.

Jausmas, apėmęs po šių dviejų renginių buvo su niekuo nesupainiojamas – mes čia. Cirko bendruomenė ne “tik pradeda vystytis” Baltijos šalyse – mes čia ir mes labai daug galime kartu. Šiuolaikinio cirko asociacija visada stengėsi sukurti saugią erdvę Baltijos cirko bendruomenei. Džiugu, kad šiais metais mums tai pavyko padaryti ir gyvai, ir virtualioje erdvėje.
